In a ABC town hall event Thursday night, Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden was asked the question by a town hall participant Mieke Haeck who is a proud mom of two girls ages eight and ten. Haeck stated that her youngest daughter (8) is transgender, and said that the Trump administration has attacked the rights of transgender people by giving the example of banning them from military services, weakening non-discrimination protections, and even removing the word transgender from government websites. Haeck directly asked the question, “How will you as President reverse this dangerous and discriminatory agenda and ensure that the lives and rights of LGBTQ people are protected under U.S. law?”
Biden responded with saying, “I will flat out just change the law…eliminate those executive orders.” The former Vice President then told a story about his childhood when he first saw two men hugging and kissing each other. Confused by what he saw, he looked at his father and his father told him, “It’s simple, they love each other.”
Biden continued with his response to her question, “The idea that an 8-year-old child or a 10-year-old child decides ‘you know I decide I want to be transgender. That’s what I think I’d like to be…it’d make my life a lot easier,. There should be zero discrimination…I promise you that there is no reason that there should be any right denied your daughter–the right to be and do…none…zero.”
Joe Biden praised his late son former Attorney General of Delaware Beau Biden for passing the first transgender law in the state of Delaware.
As the segment was ending and they started to cut to commercial, Biden told the listening audience he was proud of what Beau had done for the transgender community.
