(LifeSite News) At the UN in Geneva recently, European countries attacked the U.S. record on abortion. The U.S. pushed back.
In a three-hour grilling during the Universal Periodic Review the U.S. sat in the dock while various European countries asserted that abortion is a human right. Though abortion is legal in the United States, the U.S. has never supported the idea that it is a human right.
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Robert Destro told the governments, “Abortion is legal in the United States, and the U.S. supports both domestic and international programs for women’s health at a very high level. But we do reject the proposition that abortion is a matter of international human rights, and affirms that all lives, both born and unborn, should be protected.”
