No Justice in Case of Elderly Christian Woman Stripped Naked Publicly

January 19, 2022 by Staff

Egypt (International Christian Concern) A year since the requested appeal in the case of Soad Thabet, Egypt’s courts still have made no efforts to pursue justice in the five and a half-year-old case. In May 2016, the village of El-Karm erupted into violence after a rumor of a cross-religious relationship had occurred. Radical Muslims burned homes and wounded three people. Thabet was the mother of the accused Christian and was attacked, stripped of her clothes and dragged outside her home.

In mid-December 2020, the Minya Criminal Court acquitted the three defendants in the case of Thabet. An appeal was set forth in January 2021 and submitted in February 2021 for the Court of Cassation to challenge the ruling that set her assailants free. To date, no hearings have been set, no reparation has been provided, and no courts have sought to move the case forward.
