Max Lucado, teaching minister of Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas, and bestselling author, announced on Tuesday he has been diagnosed with an ascending aortic aneurysm.
Lucado’s diagnosis is a very serious issue. If the bulge in the aorta continues to grow, the 66-year-old once dubbed “America’s Pastor” by Christianity Today is at risk of it rupturing which could cause life-threatening internal bleeding. If the aneurysm is at risk of rupturing, surgery will be required.
Lucado’s current medical plan from doctors is to monitor the aneurysm’s growth, hoping it does not grow larger so it won’t require surgery.
“I feel fine. I am under the care of an outstanding medical team, and most of all, I am in the hands of a good God,” the God Will Use This for Good: Surviving the Mess of Life author said.
In his video announcement, Lucado asked his followers to pray for “the Lord to let His perfect, perfect will be done.”
Lucado’s announcement comes just weeks after revealing he battled COVID-19 despite having received both doses of the Pfizer vaccine earlier this spring. Crediting the vaccine, Lucado said he didn’t experience any breathing issues, although it did feel like he had “three cases of the flu.”

Dear Friends,
I want to take a moment to share with you some personal medical news. Recently I was diagnosed with an ascending aortic aneurysm. Because this is a serious condition, I wanted you to hear from me personally.
Though surgery is a possibility, none is planned at the moment. The current strategy is to wait, watch, and pray that the aneurysm doesn’t increase any further in size. I am maintaining my normal routines and commitments; my ministry is undisturbed by this news.
Here’s the good news: I feel fine. I am under the care of an outstanding medical team, and most of all, I am in the hands of a good God.
